Win-Win Program
The Win-Win Program (WWP is a collaborative effort between Bellows Free Academy St. Albans and City, Town, Sheldon, Georgia, Fairfield and Bakersfield elementary schools to bring the proven benefits of mentoring relationships to participating students. It is well documented that successful school experiences, indeed, successful life experiences, are linked to the presence of supportive relationships, positive role models and an individual's sense of "connectedness".
The primary goals of the WWP are to:
- provide elementary-aged children with additional support, enhancing their chances of having successful school experiences.
- give teen mentors an opportunity to use and further develop skills and qualities while providing invaluable support to others.
In its first year the WWP matched seven mentors to City students. Last year the program grew to fifty members that include the Athletic Council and the Leadership Training Class at BFA. While the experiences have varied, the focus remains on building the supportive relationships that lead to healthy development in social, emotional, and academic areas. Mentors accomplish this goal during a balance of academic and recreational activities.
Requirements to mentor: Mentors are asked to spend from 45-90 minutes per week with their elementary match during a regularly scheduled school activity (reading, math, gym lunch, recess, etc.) and to SIGN OUT OF ENRICHMENT PERIOD TO W106 FOR ATTENDANCE and then go to the mentoring site. The elementary teachers will work with mentors so that they are prepared to help us with that goal. Mentor orientation, training and ongoing support are critical program components and will be provided by qualified professionals. All participants will be asked to evaluate the program at points along the way for the purpose of making improvements in services.
