Senior English Seminar-Medical Professions

Overview--English Integration in the Tech Center:

            During the 2010-2011 school year, NWTC and BFA English will pilot a program in the Tech Center’s Human Services & Medical Professions Academy afternoon classes in which students will earn their required high school English credit during their Tech Center course.  The programs involved include afternoon only students in Human Services, Emergency & Fire Services, Medical Professions, and Cosmetology.  During the summer the Academy teachers met with the BFA English instructor and the BFA English Department Chair to design this innovative program.  They reviewed curriculum documents, course syllabi, competencies and standards.  The instructors worked together to find the inherent English in Tech programs and to align the curriculum used to identify where English standards fit into the Tech curriculum.  Our Tech teachers familiarized themselves with the BFA English Power Standards, selected materials to be used in their programs, and discussed units to be presented.

                This new delivery model allows English and Tech instruction to be delivered in a number of innovative ways. The program is based on a proficiency model focusing on the students meeting the standard. Instructors have discussed assessment practices, common local assessments, and essential components of the curriculum to ensure students have the opportunity to gain proficiency in the standards rather than simple exposure to them.  Students, actively engaged in their Tech Center curriculum, will have the English curriculum seamlessly incorporated into normal lessons/applications.  At BFA this course is called English Seminar (Junior English Seminar for juniors and Senior English Seminar for seniors).  This is a college prep curriculum that meets BFA’s requirements for English.

Program Description:

            For Junior/Senior English Seminar, students will be presented with material and assignments, which blend English with their current course. This course will meet the Vermont Teaching Standards for reading comprehension, responses to literature, use of literary elements and devices, responding to texts and writing structures. Students will be required to complete any assigned work, in order to receive a passing grade for English.
