EARTH'S NATURAL RESOURCES

An Inconvenient Truth - Global Warming film with Questions, followed by a current events article on the latest news involving Global Warming for students to summarize/reflect on.

Global Warming Solutions Poster - Students create a mini-poster with five illustrated solutions to reduce Global Warming.  Poster is graded on title, quality solutions, illustrations and overall quality.

Acid Rain - Students learn about how air pollution from energy production, industry, and transportation can lead to acid rain, which is damaging to ecosystems and architecture.  They will be carving small statues using chalk (calcium carbonate) and exposing them to an acid (vinegar).  They will also be doing a reading on Acid Rain and answering critical thinking questions about the problem.

Pollution Walk Along Stephens Brook - Students will be going on a short walk around different parts of Stephens Brook looking for signs of human impacts on the waterway, in particular different forms of pollution and identifying sources of potential pollutants.

Global Dumping Ground - PBS Frontline special about the business practice of exporting toxic substances to countries around the world.  Students will watch the special and answer questions about the problem and discuss solutions.

Studying Ice Core Data - Students graph real ice core data from Antarctica and then analyse it to determine different environmental conditions and answer questions.

WEATHER & STORMS

Weather Tracking & Graphing - Students will be keeping track of important weather data from three different parts of the world:       1. South Pole Weather          2. Equator Weather (Quito, Ecuador)          3. St. Albans, VT Weather (Halfway Equator to Poles)

Extreme Weather Project - Students will be working in partners and selecting an extreme weather type from the following list: avalanche, blizzard, cold wave, cyclone, drought, dust storm, earthquake, fog, flood, heat wave, hurricane, ice storm, landslide, lightning, thunderstorm, tornado, tsunami, volcano, wildfires, and windstorm.  They will be creating a 10-slide presentation to share with the class, with emphasis on organization, clear points, and presenting skills.

Twister - Students will be watching the 1996 film about stormchasers in the midwest United States.  They will be studying the film for techniques and technology that is used to learn about tornadoes, and focusing on the inherent risks of the process.

Extra Credit: Pick one of the following eras in the history of our Earth:

  • Precambrian
  • Paleozoic
  • Mesozoic
  • Cenozoic

For your era, you need to make a presentation with at least 10 slides with pictures illustrating your main points.  You should discuss when the era occurred, the major things happening to the Earth, the major life on Earth (plants, animals, etc.), and any major extinctions, catastrophes, etc.  Use the section in Ch. 9 of our textbook to find what is most important in our era to share with the class.  Presentations will occur the week before exams, with points added to your lowest test grade.
