Earth Science 416

Course Description:

In this course, we will learn how to think about, gather and use information to solve problems through the study of Earth Science. We accomplish this by discussing several main topics: Physical Science principles, Meteorology, Geology (rocks, soils, erosion,), Plate Tectonics, Resource Management and Astronomy through lecture, notes, activities in class, projects, experiments, graphical analysis, homework, quizzes, tests, etc.

Requirements:

-       3 ring binder with paper.

  • This will be used to organize all handouts, notes, quizzes and tests. I will check your notebooks throughout the trimester at different, random times to ensure you have the required materials.

-       Lab Notebook – Used for all lab experiments. AL data will be input into lab notebook prior to writing and final lab report.

-       Pencils and pens.

Grading:

-       Projects/Experiments:                              30%

-       Homework:                                    10%

-       Final Exam/Final Project:                          20%

-       Tests/Quizzes:                                          10%

-       Accountability/Dependability:                  15%

- Reflections/Analysis: 15%

  • Each assignment you hand in is expected to be your BEST WORK. Al assignments are required to be handed in on the due date in order to receive accountability credit (1 point for handed in on time; 0 pts. For not handed in on time). Scores will be added up from time to time throughout the semester and input as accountability/dependability. If work is handed in on time and NOT performed to satisfaction (see back), students will lose the accountability/dependability score for that assignment.

  • Homework Check – When bookwork is assigned, students will be expected to read the assignment and answer the questions for the next day. There will not be an opportunity to make up ANY bookwork assignments late (unless absent) for a grade. Each assignment will be graded on a 2-point system. I will total all the points at the end of the semester and input as a Homework/Reflection grade.
  • 2 pts for full completion
  • 1 pt for partial completion
  • 0 pts for no attempt

Make sure you read this carefully:

-It is expected that students will turn in all classwork, homework and reflections done to a satisfactory degree.

-It is expected that students will score a 80% or higher on all parts of tests, quizzes, labs, and projects.

-Students who do not turn in work or who have not received an 80% or higher on all parts of tests, quizzes, labs, and projects are expected to turn in or make up that work within 2 days of the due date or test date.  After 2 days the student is assigned a detention with the teacher to get extra help on the work and/or perform the assignment.

-Students who do not meet these criteria will receive an incomplete for a grade until work is complete to a satisfactory degree. If work is not completed by the end of the grading period (or by the end of the extension granted by the Teacher), student wil receive a failing grade for not completing the requirements of the course.
