Course Description:
In this course, we will investigate how humans have impacted the local environment. We will discuss major concepts such as sustainability, water pollution and ecological change. We will learn how to think about, gather and use information to solve environmental problems. We will accomplish this by investigating a wide variety of topics at Stevens Brook including water quality, macroinvertebrates, stream development, deposition and erosion, and watershed management.
We will also be responsible for recycling in both the south and north building. Each section of Environmental Science will perform recycling once a week in one of the two buildings.
Requirements:
- 3-ring binder with loose-leaf paper - for organizing numerous handouts and taking notes throughout the trimester.
- Lab Notebook – For taking field notes and organizing the various lab investigations
- Pencil/Pen
Assessment:
15% - Reflections/analysis/activities
20% - Final Exam
15% - Quizzes
30% - Projects/Experiments
10% - Recycling
10% - Accountability/Dependability
Make sure you read this carefully:
-It is expected that students will turn in all classwork, homework and reflections done to a satisfactory degree.
-It is expected that students will score a 70% or higher on all parts of tests, quizzes, labs, and projects.
-Students who do not turn in work or who have not received a 70% or higher on all parts of tests, quizzes, labs and projects are expected to turn in or make up that work within 2 days of the due date or test date. After 2 days the student is assigned a detention with the teacher to get extra help on the work and/or perform the assignment.
-Students who do not meet these criteria will receive an incomplete for a grade until work is complete to a satisfactory degree. If work is not completed at the end of the grading period (or by the end of the extension granted by the Teacher), then the student will receive a failing grade for not completing the requirements of the course.
