Course Description
Course title (#): AP Chemistry 468
Description: Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry 468- B is the second semester of a two semester college-level general chemistry course. Students who successfully complete this course should be well prepared to take the AP chemistry exam in May. This course will reinforce the chemical principles learned in college-prep chemistry such as the periodic table, chemical formulas and equations, stoichiometry, and chemical bonding. This course will also include new topics such as the hybrid theory, the molecular orbital theory, organic chemistry, redox chemistry, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, and thermodynamics. Students will conduct advanced labs, prepare lab reports, complete problem sets, take unit exams, and complete an individual research project.
Prerequisites: Grade of B or better in Chemistry 437 and a B or better in Algebra 337, or instructor's permission.
Credit: ½
Teacher Expectations: Students are expected to participate in class activities and labs, to work independently and in groups, and to act responsibly in class.
Texts & Materials: Chemistry: The Central Science by Brown , Lemay, and Bursten. Prentice Hall pub. @2006
Student material needed: 1 three-ring binder, 1 lab composition notebook, and a graphing calculator.
Make-up Work: Work and labs missed during an excused absence must be made-up within a reasonable amount of time. Work missed during an unexcused absence may not be made-up and will be given a zero.
Grading System: Grading will be based on the following criteria:
| Points | |
|---|---|
| Total: | 825 |
| 4 Exams: 100 points each | 400 |
| 8 Problems sets : 10 points each | 80 |
| 3 Lab reports : 25 points each | 75 |
| Lab notebook : | 70 |
| Project: | 100 |
| Class Participation: | 100 |
Teacher availability for help: During free periods and before and after school by appointment.
Other: Every attempt should be made to hand in all assignments on time. Work handed in late or work not made up within two school days after an excused absence will receive a 1% deduction per day late on the Homework- Participation Grade up to a total of 3% per assignment.
