Description: Chemistry 434 is a lab-based course designed for the student who is general education, vocational, or college bound. The major content of the course includes three units: scientific inquiry, water chemistry, and chemical resources. Each unit also includes the major concepts, basic vocabulary, and laboratory skills expected in any introductory chemistry course. The emphasis in this course is on using the principles of chemistry to better understand the current issues students will encounter that involve science and technology.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Biology 424 or 426 and junior or senior standing.
Credit: 1/2
Teacher Expectations: Students are expected to participate in class activities and labs, to work independently and in groups, and to act responsibly in class.
Texts & Materials: ChemCom-Chemistry in the Community by the American Chemical Society. Kendall/Hunt publisher- 4th edition, copyright 2002.
Student material needed: 1 three-ring binder and 1 composition book.
Make-up Work: Work missed during an excused absence must be made-up within a reasonable amount of time. Work missed during an unexcused absence may not be made-up and will be given a zero.
Grading System: Points
Unit Evaluation: 40 points each X 3 = 120
Quizzes: 10 points each X 6 = 60
Lab reports: 25 points each X 2= 50
Lab notebook= 60
Homework and participation= 100
2 Projects 25 points each X 2 50
Total= 440
Teacher availability for help: enrichment period and before or after school.
Other: Any late work will result in a deduction on the homework/participation grade. One extra credit project may be done to earn up to a total of 15 points (or 3% of the final grade). Extra credit must be approved in advance.
