Unit 1 - Colonial America

In unit 1 we examine the political, economic, social and philosophical foundations of colonial America. We will compare and contrast the three emerging regions of the colonies and assess the degree to which the colonies developed a society different and distinct from Europe. We will learn about our country's British heritage as well as how the colonies modified British institutions to the point that reconciliation was no longer possible.

At the conclusion of the unit, you will be able to answer the following essential questions:

  • To what extent did the three sections of colonial America share common institutions and philosophies?
  • What philosophical forces developing in colonial America weakened authoritarianism and created a climate for individual freedom?
  • Although colonial Americans criticized the British for exploitation, how did they rationalize their own exploitation of blacks, women, and Native Americans?
  • To what extent did democracy develop in colonial America?
  • Why couldn't the British successfully reverse a tradition of neglect after the French and Indian War?
  • In what respects did the colonies develop political, economic, social, and religious views inconsistent with their colonial status?
